The role players were:

SAA - Muhendaran, ATMG
Invocation - Rema Paul, ATMS
Toastmaster of the Evening - Lourdes, DTM
Table Topics Master - Chandran, CTM
Table Topics Evaluator - Lakhmichand, ATMB
General Evaluator - Ivan Fong, CTM

Grammarian - Chuah Hooi Bien
Timer - Huegesh

It was a very eventful night, something few of us will ever forget and probably will use the experiences in our speeches. Mr. Murphy (of the Murphy’s Law fame) was a little active on that night, unfortunately for us. We decided to have our meeting in a new venue, BIS, Bangsar Utama (actually not that new, since it was our former venue), moving away from KG Café. While some of us were having our dinner at this new venue, there was a power disruption. The whole place went dark and nothing electrical was working. The whole office block was out off power supply. Our president, Ranjit Singh and our immediate past president Lucky were stuck in the lift (for an unplanned presidential meeting) After a while (and after a little panicking, which they denied happened) they managed to free themselves from their holding cell, I mean the lift. We then had to walk down 4 flights of stairs to get out of the building, using the illumination from hand-phones as our guiding light (there are other uses to hand-phones besides talking, which you can only learn from a Toastmasters meeting). We had to carry the food down as well. Once down, we discovered that our VP of Education, Shanmugam was trapped in the lobby and could not get out as the lift was not working. Like a trapped “animal”, he struggled looking for a way out, then finally settled down to the long wait before he could be freed. The rest of us, after realising it will be sometime before the power will be back on, decided that the meeting must go on. We carried our food and walked back to KG Café to have our meeting. Meanwhile, our president, Ranjit, decided to stay back and keep our trapped VPE company. Because we didn’t have our lights and rostrum with us, we had to improvise with coloured cards and tables.

Throughout this ordeal, the members of Bangsar Toastmasters worked together as a team, without any complains or grumbles, to make sure that the meeting continued as normal. Kudos to all our members. I am proud of calling myself a Bangsar Toastmasters Club member because of all of you.

The meeting went on quite smoothly despite everything. Since both the president and the VPE were stuck at the BIS building, our VPPR Lakhmichand took over as acting President and opened the meeting at 7.45 pm.

The table topics master gave us topics that forced us to put ourselves in the shoes of different personalities. The following were the table topics speakers and the personalities they were supposed to be and what they would do if they were them :

1. Loke Kah Sing - Area Governor of

Toastmasters International
2. Ranjit Singh - Mother Theresa

(still can’t get rid of this image in my

head, Mother Theresa looking like him)
3. Muhendaran - Inspector General of Police
4. Imogen - President Bush
5. Shanmugam - a priest

The Best Table Topics Speaker was Imogen.

The speakers for the night were:

1. Michelle – 4th C&L Manual Speech

Her speech title was “The key to communication”

Her evaluator was Rema Paul, ATMS

2. Loke Kah Sing – 4th C&L Manual Speech

His speech title was “Our Club”

His evaluator was Lakhmichand, ATMB

3. Maureen – 5th C&L Manual Speech

Her speech title was “Ah ha Moments”

Her evaluator was Muhendaran, ATMG

The Best Speaker was Loke Kah Sing

The Best Evaluator was Muhendaran, ATMG

Overall, it was a fun and interesting meeting. Most importantly, it was a meeting that showed our support and commitment to the club.
